A scholar of the early American military, Joe is currently researching the Franco-American coalition during the American War of Independence.

He is a historian at the Fred W. Smith National Library for the Study of George Washington at Mount Vernon where he oversees the library’s leadership programming.

Joe’s first book, A Bloodless Victory: the Battle of New Orleans in History and Memory, is available through Johns Hopkins University Press. Joe held the position of Rowan Post-doctoral fellow in the Department of History at the United States Military Academy prior to joining the team at Mount Vernon.
