  1. Joe, Great post, beautifully vvid. I found quite interesting your statement that Washington was not known to walk among the men at Valley Forge. Might he have evaluated conditions on horseback? I spent time at Valley Forge on the 31st in near-zero degree weather. The story that unfolded at that place hits home.

    1. Matthew, great question. I don’t mean to imply that he never left the house to evaluate the condition of his soldiers, just that he wasn’t doing the slap-em-on-the-back moral boosting that Hollywood seems intent on depicting. Washington was very stoic in his public persona, and normally would have been the stone faced head coach on the sidelines that flips his play calling sheet to defense after as his offense fumbles the ball.
